The Clog

Seattle has entered a 19 day period of traffic chaos. Most lanes of northbound I-5 will be closed in downtown Seattle as workers replace expansion joints and resurface the road. Alternate routes have been published in the paper, people are encouraged to try trains and busses (or even bikesJ), and some people will tele-commute. Monday mornings commute will be the first taste of ugliness. Some dire predictions warn of 14 mile backups.

Unfortunately this is just the beginning. There are 24 bridges and viaducts that are in need of new expansion joints. The Seattle section is rated 49.9 out of a 100, though the repair will only bring it up to a 65. The Seattle Times has set up a webpage with cameras and driver stories at http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/theclog/. There is also a mobile link, though of course they don't recommend surfing and driving at the same time.
